Sixteen years had passed and here was Severus with a hand on her cold grave.

He had scared Lily with his interest in the Dark Art and shameful insults, and she'd taken up with Potter the unholy prat.

It is better to be feared than loved, if you can't be both, Severus thought, echoing Machiavelli.

She feared his coming here, he had sensed it while scrying at home. Simple enough, the method he used, a small black mirror, with water droplets sprayed across it. He held his wand cupped so as to feel the energy building between his palms, what the Chinese call “Chi.” He concentrated the force onto the mirror, in the center of his circle, his eyes not leaving the mirror and the water.

He wanted absolution, forgiveness. The dead can not truly come back, but this was slightly like the mirror of Erised, but did not know his desire. Instead, the truth. Three times over, he had paid his debt. He had a debt to finish soon enough, a hateful one. He would do it, bring down the dying man, because his decisive mind had no trouble making connections between things, even when, especially when, no one else saw them.

Samhain = Halloween = Lily's Deathday = His second chance.
That much a small child of nine could tell.

Did they know? It also meant:
Pagan magic + All Hallows Eve + Lily resting in a mirror, smiling = nearly any chance was worth it.

He felt so hollow thinking of her face in his mind's eye and intuition kept telling him she would not come for fear he would not let her go.

He opened his eyes and thought he saw a flash of long red hair departing. He would not keep her, and deny her love. Perhaps it was better to be loved than feared, but it couldn't work in his favour.

31 October. He picked up the mirror from the foot of the grave. Severus walked through the falling leaves, scowling. He may have scryed at home too, but he needed to be close to her bones, so that he could tend to his.

Thanks. Halloween is meant to be creepy, and Samhain is not ss much, but it is a time when the departed are nearest.

I agree with scratchingpost1 - I found this very chilling, and angst-y. The perfect thing to read on Halloween night, really.

Your last lines are envy worthy. Nice job on this! I liked the imagery of Lily resting in the mirror, smiling for him.

There may be a darker undertone, but absolution is a universal want and it doesn't always have to be dark. Severus wanting to make things right, anyhow, any way. I liked it.

Thanks for entering!
